dolce-and-gabbana-imagining-the-future-alta-orologeria-confindustria-2023-atlanticus-banner

“Atlanticus” is the Dolce&Gabbana Alta Orologeria timepiece whose uniqueness is owed to its timeless beauty and unparalleled mechanical movement.  The exceptional complications of this “Column” wheel, single-button manual wrist chronograph with flying Tourbillon tell a marvelous story of art, excellence, and passion.  “Atlanticus” was crafted with the most sophisticated metalworking techniques, all executed by hand, whose roots go back to the great tradition of Italian goldsmithery.

The specially designed movement is crafted in Switzerland, in homage to the virtuosity of Swiss watchmaking.

Leonardo da Vinci and his “Codex Atlanticus”, the largest bound set of drawings and writings by the genius of the Renaissance, preserved at the Veneranda Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan, are the inspiration behind this masterpiece. This exceptional compendium encompasses the most varied subjects, from mechanics to anatomy, chemistry to astronomy, geography to botany, and owes its name to the large format of the pages, normally used for atlases, onto which the sculptor Pompeo Leoni affixed Leonardo’s sketches. This rearrangement of the writings and drawings of the great master was done at the end of the 16th century, several decades after his death and a complicated series of vicissitudes and changes of ownership.

The Tourbillon

The Tourbillon, a sophisticated and complex device, was invented in the late 18th century by the father of modern watchmaking, Abraham-Louis Breguet who later patented it in 1801. With this innovation, he succeeded in improving the precision of pocket watches by offsetting the advances and delays resulting from the effects of the force of gravity.  By rotating on its axis at the speed of one complete revolution per minute, the device automatically compensates for possible delays or advances that might be generated by the imbalance of a balance.

The Manual Mechanical Chronograph

The DG 23.03 caliber is a Swiss-made mechanical chronograph offering excellent performance. The Tourbillon, a device that compensates for tiny variations in precision, assures a certified accuracy of +/- 4 seconds per day. The “Column” wheel used for the activation of the chronograph, is considered by experts to be the best mechanical system for the activation of a chronograph, compared to the “rocking” system typically used. Thanks to the design of the new “barrel and spring” engine, the power reserve totals approximately 100 hours.
