The evocative atmosphere of Sicily and its ancient treasures come back to life in this room, highlighting a vibrant culture. Ceramics, with roots immersed in the ancient Mycenaean era, and colourful carts, living symbols of the golden age of Greece, embody an identity deeply ingrained in the hearts of Sicilian people.

In this picturesque setting that honours Sicilian traditions, visitors will not only admire a selection of Alta Moda and Alta Gioielleria garments and accessories presented in Palermo for the FW 17/18 collection, but also a meticulously crafted, authentic parade cart on display. It showcases painted wooden panels and ceramic tiles by three master craftsmen: Salvatore Sapienza, the Bevilacqua brothers and Gianfranco Fiore.

The Sicilian cart has played a pivotal role in the island’s history, evolving from a practical tool into a cherished work of art. Its intricate decorations are crafted with great care and expertise, often drawing inspiration from mythological, religious, and folkloric themes. Each cart is a unique expression of Sicilian history and tradition, carrying with it a piece of the island’s rich cultural heritage.

Today, the tradition of Sicilian cart art is proudly preserved and passed down through the generations, ensuring the enduring beauty and significance of this cultural symbol remains alive.

Salvatore Sapienza, embarked on his artistic journey at the age of 13 when he began attending the workshop of Sicilian painters Domenico Di Mauro and Antonio Zappalà. Under their tutelage, Sapienza mastered the intricacies of the craft, cultivating a deep passion for this artisanal form that would become his lifelong love.

While Sapienza cannot dedicate his entire life to his craft, he has created approximately 30 carts in his Catania workshop, including the one currently on display in this room.

The exquisite tiles showcased are a testament to the exceptional craftsmanship of renowned Ceramica Bevilacqua. Founded by brothers Antonio and Giuseppe Bevilacqua, this workshop is nestled in the Sicilian hinterland of Caltanissetta. Within their distinguished establishment, these artisans are fervently committed to rejuvenating the island’s ancient decorative techniques, drawing inspiration from Sicilian majolica. The brothers’ artistic touch enriches the tradition, making it truly unique.

After completing an intensive course of decorative painting studies at the Istituto d’Arte di Monreale and the Accademia di Palermo, Gianfranco Fiore delved into the heart of Palermo’s historic centre to uncover the centuries-old tradition of Sicilian carts. With boundless passion, he absorbed the historical techniques of renowned master craftsmen before opening his workshop in Partinico. Together with Salvatore Sapienza, he created the majestic wall panels that adorn this room.
